Hub is one of the main characters in the movie, he is a man in his older years who has been through many hard times and has seen any number things. In his prime he was a fighter, a brave man unafraid of any challenge. He succeeded at many thins and could do as he pleased. Therefore, the reality of getting old was painful and frustrating for a man so full of passion and energy, and he struggled to find his purpose. When his nephew Walter was left to live with him, he forced some prospective on to Hub. Near the end of the movie Walter gives a speech to Hub telling him that he can’t just sit around and wait to die. He explained that there are plenty of things to live for even when life seems impossibly hard. Walter explained how he looked up to Hub and wanted him to be there to raise him and help him become a man. Earlier in the movie Hub o rdered a lion in hopes of hunting it, but when it arrived it was old, worn out and tired, they called it a second hand lion. Later in the story that second had lion sacrificed itself to save Walter. Hub is just like that secondhand lion. He may be out of is prime and his crazy adventurous days may be over, but he still has fight left in him, and more importantly he has many valuable life lessons that he has yet to share. I was around children who had money and opportunity and two parents where I had no money, and just a single mom. Kids laughed when I had holes in my shoes and ripped stockings and none of the popular toys, and parents whispered when my mom couldnt afford to rent a hall for my birthday party or a clown, or a larger cake. It hurt when others pointed it out. I felt ashamed of my small home and my clothes and the word poor, and the fact that it was a woman raising me. The words that offended me hurt as a child but does it mean language should be regulated? The Articles by Kakutani and Lakoff are compared and contrasted based on free speech in language, while both provide great arguments, Lakoff is more persuasive due to her use of logos. Robin Lakoff’s â€Å"Hate Speech† makes compelling arguments about the language that is considered â€Å"the norm†. Lakoff even states the whale every on finds hate speech as, â€Å"deplorable, and no reasonable person would ever indulge in any form of it† (Lakoff 313). She points out repeatedly that hate speech is a form of racism. Social standing is also important as to whether or not people think that hate speech and racism still exist and are a problem according to Lakoff, but she goes on to state that no one can really define speech. Language is, thought mad observable† (Lakoff 314). but how are you to manage and punish that? who is to determine what you can and cant say? Language is, â€Å"sensitive to context† (Lakoff 315), and therefore how are we to determine what is and is not appropriate to punish? Ultimately she says that once we stop giving words the power to change the world then they wont. While Lakoff herself focuses on the regulations of free speech, Machiko Kakutani takes different approach. Talking about the need for political correctness in her article â€Å"the Word Police†, Kakutani admits to needing politically correct language in order to eliminate sexism and racism, â€Å"ut the methods and fervor of the self-appointed language police.. open] the movement to the scorn of conservative opponents and the mockery of cartoonists and late night television hosts† (Kakutani 329). She goes on to talk about other types of racism and how the author Ms. Maggio talks about how in everyday language the word black is used derogatorily and it should be replaces with synonyms, words such as â€Å"ostracize† for â€Å"blackball†, and â€Å"payola† for â€Å"blackmail†, and â€Å"outcast† for â€Å"black sheep†. He bemoans the â€Å"Orwellian willingness to warp the meaning of words by placing them under a high powered idealogical lense† (Kakutani 331). He examine everything with a sarcastic tone of how while it is important, politically correct language also is diminishing itself because of too many regulations. Both writers talk a great deal about politically correct language. Lakoff thinks that racism is rooted in the use of hate speech, but that when the nation stops getting offended by the use of words then the society can enjoy a more forgiving first amendment. Kakutani would agree as she states the universities becoming stricter with politically correct language and taking the words queer and the n word away from the gays and black communities who want to take it out of the hands of the racist and making them their own. We as Americans have been giving rights to this choice. People during the medieval times almost always blamed the supernatural as the cause of these diseases. There were also many limitations in the amount of scientific advancement because of the church.In modern days, we may take for granted the achievements that have been made over the centuries, but these break-troughs could not have been realized, without the foundation and work of scientists during the medieval time. Medieval medicine affected all parts of life in those times, from scientific to social, and in positive and negative ways. Medieval medicine had too many influences from the church whic h therefore hindered its progress. Most of the treatments and beliefs in folk medicine were mystical or magical, and had its basis in sources that were not agreed upon in the Christian faith.Remedies included spells and incantations, but later these had to be replaced with Christian prayers or devotions. The church taught that diseases or ailments were sent by God as a punishment for wrong doing, so many people resisted the explanations of illness. Therefore advancement in medicine was generally frowned upon. Everyone had their own opinions on the matter as there wasn’t any hard evidence of the actual cause. Another dilemma to the people was the matter of how the diseases spread. As most of the population consisted of farmers in those times, they had little or no, formal education. So when someone acquired a disease, they went to their local physician, which was an all-around doctor. Physicians were scarce, but seen as skilled people because of their ‘knowledge. In reality, their work was based on a very poor knowledge of the human anatomy. (Trueman 3) The affect of medical studies, cures, and its problems left society vulnerable to, in fact more diseases. As people were unaware of the causes and cures, they relied on local physicians who weren’t exactly well versed. This may in turn result in a misdiagnosis and the patient ending up more ill or dead. This dilemma pushed people to seek their own remedies. The most interesting part of medicine in the medieval times was the remedy and curing.These varied throughout society depending on your background, wealth, and religiousness. Some, more religiously bound â€Å"doctors told patients that a pilgrimage to a holy shrine to show your love of God would cure them of illnesses especially if they had some holy water sold at the place of pilgrimage. † (Truman 1) As one can see, any treatment that you thought was right could have worked better than another, as cures were based on more of a philosophical look rather than with scientific back-up.Some weird cures were to hold a candle close to your teeth to burn of the worms on the teeth.
